Initially “i” may have stood for “Internet” but worked so well as branding that “i” was added to software titles, implying “you” or “my” in a brand conscious way.

However, I thought it was clear at the time that iPod first came into being that it was an abbreviation for “Intelligent Portable Device” – since this was the first (at least mass market) portable audio device not to require some sort of removable media.
